Come at Me, Bro!
I've already had my first "sir" experience, so there's no need to stress over that, but I did have sort of the opposite happen...No not being called "ma'am" although that happened a lot to me as a child/teenager/last week when someone calls on the phone and even after I clearly state my name (Jeff, which is super feminine, obviously) they continue to address me as ma'am. I then would try to drop my voice to sound ultra-masculine, but I think I end up sounding like a husky lady of the night...Anyway, for this story, I was not addressed as ma'am, nor sir, but as "Bro".
Without further adieu, here is my bro story:
A volunteer and I were in charge of getting lunch for the crew and we went to this little sandwich shop in town and being a gentleman, I let Mathilda (the volunteer) order first. That is in fact not her real name, but I wish to respect of her privacy and I also didn't ask if I could share this story, so there.
Anyway, Mathilda ordered a salad, and the clerk, who I am almost certain was stoned out of his head, called her "ma'am" and asked her what kind of dressing she wanted. He then, almost immediately following this comment, turned to me and said. "What can I get you, bro?"
I am in my early thirties (although I look about twenty-two) and Mathilda is in her early-to-mid twenties and she looks her age, which means we both basically look her age. So I figured he would stick with the formal approach. He did not. He called me bro, which surprised me so much that I actually hesitated to ruminate a little before ordering placing my order. I was about to be offended, but then I thought about it...
Instead of feeling slighted, I (probably incorrectly) assumed that he was giving me the nod as a fellow "bro" to let me know that he was there to help. I nodded to him and then realized we had come to an understanding as bros and he was gonna take care of me...
By take care of me, I mean that he would screw up my order in ways I was not sure were possible. At the end of the transaction, he handed me my four sandwiches (two of the sandwiches were supposed to be salads and the other two sandwiches were not really what I ordered), but I kept it to myself to honor the Bro Code and accepted my bounty. It then dawned on me that perhaps he was indeed so high that he was having a sort of out of body experience and not really communicating that we had a special connection as bros...but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and after another nod I said, "Thanks, Bro!"
So, that's my bro story...I am still not sure how I feel about being addressed as bro, so if you're unsure how to proceed, please call me ma'am.
