Do-It-Yourself MST3K

So I got invited to my first Drive In Movie Experience this weekend and I have to tell you it was great! Growing up in New Orleans, we (to my knowledge) didn't have a drive in, since Napoleon banned them because watching movies on horseback is silly, or because its too humid or whatever...

The only thing I can compare it to is an outdoor concert (like Jazz Fest), but if Jazz Fest was in the parking lot and you couldn't really hear anything.

Secondly, I was nearly caught unawares by the level of do-it-yourself responsibilities to ensure a pleasant movie going experience. Since I have extensive skills in buying camping gear that I rarely use, I was more than adequately prepared for just such an occasion.

We parked and shuffled out of our respective cars to set up line of camping chairs, blankets, snack foods, drinks, and eagerness to be entertained. Apparently, most people stay in their cars, because that is where the audio for the movie comes from, but I camped outside the car causing me to rely solely on my lip-reading skills, which are amazing.

The whole set up reminded me of Mystery Science Theater 3000, which was a silly show on Comedy Central years ago. The premise was that a space station janitor and his robot friends are trapped in space and the only way to pass the time in their space station that has a full movie theater in (obviously) is to watch and mock horrible sci-fi movies.

So there we were, our very own Joel, Tom Servo and Crow with all of us lined up filling in whatever dialogue we could to create a coherent story to go along with the images on the screen, which was located roughly 6 miles from our car. It took me a few minutes, but once I honed my considerable powers of observation, I am pretty sure I got the full cinematic experience.

We watched what I am fairly certain was a romantic comedy about a young lady trying to find her true love abroad. It was called Wonder Woman and despite their being a lot more gunfire than I am used to in a rom com, it was a good flick.

I mean, it was no Manos: Hands of Fate...but it was well worth the effort, cost of admission and mild frostbite.

  1. Wonder Woman at the drive-in; does it get any better than that? You are so funny.
